ELITE COACHING
with Todd Williams

This Elite Coaching course is aimed at more experienced hockey coaches who are looking to improve their knowledge on the most recent advances in the modern game. The course adopts a more theory-based outlook compared to some of our other courses. Participants will take part in limited practical demonstrations in the morning followed by video analysis in the afternoon to increase their level of understanding.

Technical Contents: 
• The latest technical developments of the game – 1st time passes
• How to coach each aspect of attacking penalty corners

Tactical Contents:
 • How to assess a player’s impact on the game
• The importance of offering 4 passing options including the ‘guard’
• Inside vs outside marking principles
• Defending with 10 Men
• Exploiting the opportunities created by playing against 10 men
• Defending long corners when the opposition have high FB’s
• How to rotate to a back 5 effectively
• Playing against deep zonal defensives

GOALKEEPING AND TEAM DEFENCE

The impact of the “self pass” has considerably changed the game of hockey. It has altered how teams attack and therefore where goals are being scored from (position in the circle).

This course is designed to give coaches the understanding they need to keep up-to-date with the changes in Goal Keeping methods so their players can be at the top of their game.

Coaching Contents:
•   What makes a great goalie and when do we decide to play in goal?
•   Physical requirements to be a goalie and core attributes to keep the ball out of the net
•   Ready position and kicking
•   Lunging and pad saves
•   Hand and stick saves
•   Smothering and groundwork
•   Diving and its various guises
•   Penalty Corners, including defending with on 3 defenders
•   Defence management

HOCKEY FOR NETBALLERS
with Matt Taylor

Field hockey is moving at an ever-increasing pace and, as a result, those who aren’t involved in the sport on a regular basis often struggle to keep up. However, has the game really developed that much and how much of the sport can be related to other sports such as netball?

This course is unique as it assesses the game of hockey – and in particular, the tactical considerations – and demonstrates the familiarities between hockey and netball to give those with a netball background more confidence when delivering hockey sessions and more importantly running the team on game day. 

Technical Contents:
• How to coach basic passing and receiving techniques
• Progressive drills to develop technique
• When to introduce more challenging techniques such as elimination
• How to perform elimination techniques under pressure

Tactical Contents:
• Similarities between netball set plays and hockey set plays
• Common terminology that can be applied across the 2 sports
• How to set teams up – formation
• An overview of the major rules

Intermediate Hockey
with Matt Taylor

This Intermediate Coaching course is aimed at a coach who has perhaps been coaching for a number of years but is looking for an ‘update’ on the most recent developments of the game and guidance on how these developments are transferred into coaching technical and tactical considerations. Participants will take part in practical demonstrations in the morning and theory based learning in the afternoon to increase their level of understanding.

Technical Contents:
• What the modern hockey player looks like (technical ability)
• The art of 1v1 defending
• Players’ decision making; ability to maintain possession and overcoming potential breakdown points
• Developing the art of self-pass
• 360° passing range

Tactical Contents:
• Modern formations
• Setting up and executing PC attack routines
• Setting up and executing PC defence routines
• Playing with and against different numbers (coping or taking advantage of suspensions)

INTRODUCTION TO COACHING AND UMPIRING SCHOOL HOCKEY

This course is aimed at teachers who are new to coaching and umpiring hockey. It gives an overview of coaching techniques for individual players’ development plus tactical considerations for team play. We also include a section on the rules of hockey and how to implement these both from a coaching view point and when umpiring. As part of the course coaches also receive 5 session plans enabling teachers to have both the knowledge and structure to begin their coaching career upon completion of the course

Coaching Contents:
• How to set up basic drills for core skill development
• When and how to introduce advanced skills
• Game play to develop basic understanding of team play
• Developing the principles of the Self Pass
• 20 fun based training drills
• Formations and set piece plays for both the 7-a -side and 11-a-side game
• 5 structured session plans

Umpiring Contents:
• The differences between umpiring 7- a-side and 11-a-side hockey
• How to play advantage with younger age groups
• An overview on all major rules
